Does it need tuning?

Hello
i have a hgt, i've put a kn filter on it and a new (lush) exhaust on it, my brother being the kitchen designer/expert mechanic says i now need it tuned. is this true? do i have to go to fiat for this? any idea of cost?

Take the negative feed off the battery, leave for 10-15mins re-connect it and go for a 10mins drive using all geras at various engine revs.
That should re-set the ecu settings.

Where did you go for your exhaust in the end?

is that something you suggest I do, with my exhaust and airfilter on my 1.8?

If you havent done it then yes!
I think it re-sets the air/fuel mixture ratios???
I think it tells you in the handbook somewhere how to do it properly.

thanks for the advice about the tunning, do that before i go out in a mo.

got my exhaust from longlife, a custom job, cost a bit more than i wanted to pay but i'm pretty sure mine is the only one with my type of back box,
went up there on a friday afternoon just to have a look at what they got and there standard of work when they said they can do it right then. i had rush of blood to the head and did it. glad i did now.

Si, you mention that you have to go through all gears at all revs. Does it mean that I have to rip down in front of my house at 7000rpm on 5th gear? Its a little too much aint it?

No not exactly, just take it through the gears at different revs, not screaming, as I think at high revs the readings are ignored.

I last disconnected mine about a month after having my exhaust fitted, it did improve, and the sound got it's first bit of a rasp to it. However it still sounded like standing 2ft from a Harrier doing a vertical lift-off ! So don't expect miracles, but it should make a difference.

One thing to mention is my alarm has battery backup and has to be turned off with the key for the siren before disconnecting the battery.

There is some truth in what Si says. It actually takes about 20 mins, certainly for the 1.6's ECU, to wake up and start doing things.

It will only make changes at steady throttle, when you are accelerating or slowing the ECU just guesses rather than taking any notice of the lambda readings. (bloody complex things really, my 3rd year thesis was about 50 pages long!)

You will notice if you drive along the motorway at a steady speed after about 15-20 mins the engine temp will suddenly drop, then come up, then drop as the ECU has a fiddle with its settings.
