Does anyone know the purpose of the red plug and lead in the pic?

Been like this for a while obviously should be connected been through haynes can't seem to find what this is.

Looks like something for the aircon. IMO

I have one loose on mine, it was infront of the engine and behind the bumper, it is for the front fog lights, but mine is white not red

That looks like the power steering hydraulic pump switch designed to bump up the tickover a bit when power steering is on heavy load if you're on tickover at the time.

As you've found, it's not that essential a bit a kit. There's similar switches on air con and heated rear screen which put a load on the engine. All depends if you like steering with air con on with engine at tickover!
