Technical Doblo 1.9jtd Gearbox/Diff problem

Just had the clutch replaced as the release brg gave up. Every thing was OK for 12 miles but on the 2nd journey a noise developed (like a dodgy wheel brg) but later diagnosed its coming from within the gearbox. Mechanic that did the work has spoken to a g/boc specialist who says this is very common and can sort it out for £325. Any one know what the exact problem is and if it can be repaired by a DIYer as the bill will soon hit £650.

Any thoughts would be useful like area to look for, bearing that is screaming, etc. etc

My 2007 Doblo 1.9 multijet has a similar excentric gear noise at slow speeds have you sorted yours? I have found ware in the near side drive shaft gearbox bearing.
