Hello,
My Fiat technician tells me I need a new timing belt (even though present one is fairly new) after an oil leak from the camshaft 'as per manufacturer specifications'. I thinks it's been oily for about 2 weeks I guess.

(Water pump leaked and I need a new water pump too.)

IS THERE A WAY THE TIMING BELT CAN BE CLEANED PLEASE?

Warmest Regards

Bill

Oil contaminated cam-belt = death for the engine...

Thanks - So it IS that serious! The belt has notches in it.
May I ask why it's 'death for the engine'?
Bill

A contaminated timing belt will deteriorate VERY quickly.

If you lose this vital timing component, being that these are
interference engines, severe damage will occur when the pistons
come in contact with the valves, thus....death for your engine.:dead:

Hope this helps.

Hello again Bill. I must apologize...:bang:

I have misled you into thinking that these were "interference" engines.

I just read in another thread that these are in fact "not" interference, therefore there should not be any damage done if the belt were to break.

All that happens is that the engine quits running. Then you're stuck having to get towed and getting the timing belt replaced.

It really is an unknown as to how long the belt will last with this level of contamination.

The decision is yours to make. Fortunately, the end result is not as bad as we previously thought.

Hope this helps.
Lou.
