Your speeds vary to what we get.
Over here the fastest ADSL service is around 20-24mb..

Yeah and thats central london, and other key cities.

Luvduvs they may be giving different results due to being in different locations. They also may not have enough bandwidth to fully test your line if traffic is at its peak. If you still have concerns ring your ISP.

One thing to check would be to logon to your 'Routers' Web interface if its accessable and check line speeds, attenuation etc.

Trying to move around or look for anything in that interface is like trying to get to Trafalgar Square to Piccadilly Circus blindfolded

We talking ADSL2 or ADSL2+ ?

Just ADSL2.

It just went down to 2Mbps - wtf?

I'm starting to get paranoid someone has hacked into the connection and stealing my bandwidth - is there anyway to check that? (Currently using WEP iirc)

Edit: Just checked my download usage for the last few weeks and nothing out of the ordinary...

I think you need to talk to your ISP.... What router do you have I can maybe point you in the right direction to find the info you need.

I did - this was my initial contact:

I've noticed the internet speed has been quite slow in the last week or so. My account is ADSL2 and in some instances I'm only getting 2Mbps, which is far too slow. Can you please look into this and let me know if there's a problem on your end?

And this was their response:

I checked your account and have seen that the settings are active. However, your modem dowsn't seem to be connecting to our server and I have seen connection dropouts which may also result to a slow speed. I would like to suggest that you try to check on the stability of your connection first before checking the speed. Please try to do the following:

* Isolate your telephone line. Disconnect all the devices connected on the ADSL phone line except for the modem. Make sure the modem is connected to the wall socket and that its phone cord is less than 3 meters in length. Any other device such as filters, splitters, double adapters, Foxtel Digital, Back to Base Alarm System, Fax Machine, EFPOS, PABX (Commander System) as well as PSTN (Public Switch Telephone Network) phones must also be disconnected from the ADSL nominated phone line. The modem should be the only device using your phone line.

If the issue continues, leave the line isolated and do the succeeding steps.

* Change the modulation of your modem to G.dmt . Please refer to the manual or contact the manufacturer of your modem for this setting.
* Use a different phone cable, preferrably 3m or less.
* Connect the modem in a different phone jack.
* Reset and reconfigure your modem. To do this, follow the steps below:
a. Using a paper clip or a pin, press and hold at the pin hole button at the back of your modem for 30 seconds while the modem is on.
b. Once the ADSL light turns solid green, you may configure your settings already. Should you need the instructions for TPG provided modems, please visit our Helpdesk website at http://www.tpg.com.au/helpdesk/ and click on Modem Configuration. Make sure that the following settings are configured:
Username: luvduvs: <your password>
Protocol / Encapsulation / Connection Type: PPPoE (sometimes, you'll have PPPoE LLC)
Multiplex: LLC
Security Protocol: PAP
VPI: 8
VCI: 35
Idle Timeout: 0
* Use a different modem for testing. You may want to borrow from a friend who has an adsl as well.

Please inform us if we could be of further assistance.

Haven't had a chance to try the above yet, but I have a feeling its not going to help because I haven't made any changes to any settings whatsoever, so I suspect the slowdown is on their end.

Modem is Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Gateway.

2mbps could be good for adsl2 depending on your particular circumstances. there is no guarantee that adsl2 is going to be faster than adsl, they simply quote higher "up to" figures, that doesnt mean you can get a higher speed. unless your adsl is achieveing 12mbps there is no point going to adsl2 because your line isnt even at the "up to" limit of adsl so there is no way it will help having adsl2. you need a suitable line to support the connection, the weakest link is always your limit, and the weakest link is very rarely (never) your adsl standard. remember the adsl "up to" figures are only the max you could have in theory, in reality you will never achieve them unless your house is on top of the exchange and everyone else is not using their connections.

plus there are different types of adsl2, if you have adsl2L (aka re-adsl2) then the max down speed is 5mbps, not 12mbps like adsl2J (the best adsl2 standard) and adsl2A.

24mbps downstream is only adsl2+, there are several adsl2+ standards but they are all 24mbps downstream.
