Is there actually that much difference performance wise between these engines?

Only on the paper. My marea 1.6 was giving 115 bhp & 150 Nm while original was 103 bhp & 144 Nm, comparing to stock 1.8 113 bhp & 155 Nm. Also, when I was racing against bravo GT(1.8) on intercity roads, bravo could not come close to my rear bumper.
Also, depending of the year of make, there are differences in gear ratios.
And there is a difference in owner's attitude to his car...

Oh yeah the 1.8 has an intermediate shaft giving equal length driveshafts on each side. The 1.6 has two different length shafts.

Ive noticed that in mine too, the left tyre spins up much easier than the right hand side.

Going for a 1.8. Given that they are pretty much the same price as the 1.6 and insurance for the 1.8 is only £35 more a year than my 1.2 i would regret not going for it.

1.8 has better performance in low revs. 1.6 is little sluggish in low revs, particulary when AC is on. When pushing hard both are alomst the same. 1.8 is known also as more reliable engine. Almost all 1.6 engines, as well in Stilo have problems with injectors. 1.8 version has better brakes (ventilated disc). GT version has better suspension for both versions (Einbach absorbers). I think 1.8 has hidraulic clutch.

Regarding stilo 1.6 engine - that engine is not the same as on bravo/brava/marea 1.6 engine which is 1581 ccm & stilo had 1597 ccm. Also, injectors are not of same construction, angle of mounting, capacity... It is also known, that engine with aluminum intake manifold is the best fiat's engine in years- not considering multiair technology. From experience with that engine over 10 years & 105000 km, never had a problem except changing cam belt @ 80000 and coil pack with plugs @ 103000 km.
