How come with the camshaft lock in place....

....is nowhere near the marker on the timing belt cover i.e dead centre at the top....

Because you have locked the cam in the wrong position. The timing needs to align with the cutout in the back plate in photo behind cam wheel with number 1 valve up. I can't remember, but did your belt snap? If so, the timing has been lost.

Thanks for this. There is only one way to attach the camlock and having checked the position of the lobes relative to TDC and double checked by turning the engine by hand, it became obvious that this part of timing kit was welded back to front. Not impressed..:(

Bloodyhell!! Id WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!!!!!!
The timing mark on the cam wheel has to be at "12 oclock" with the cam lobe ready to open the valve.
Btw, you dont need to lock the cam on this engine as its only single cam. Just make sure the cam timing is set to TDC before removing head.

Re: Diesel timing mark mismatch - and picture request

Yep I will get a refund. With the cam at 1200 (and the other end facing the exact opposite of the the timing tool!) the engine is turning fine.

Ps - can anyone post a close up picture of the TD engine in the car so I can re-run my rubber pipes in the right places?

Many thanks
