Mine cut the gum but did not get much further so you could not keep them clean. I went in as an inpatient and had all 4 out under a general. long time ago but they may have been stitched afterwards. It was really painful and took weeks to recover from, bit of a shock as I was back at work 2 weeks after appendix out (I was on a bonus at the time) .
