Dell RAM

right, some of you may know i got a PC off my mate last night.

it's fairly decent but i could do with more RAM.

tried the ram out of my old PC of around the same age, so just DDR i think, wouldn't fit, tried the RAM from my Dad's Newish Dell with DDR2 RAM and that doesn't look like it will fit either, the slots are wierd like none i have seen.

on the ram there is a slot right dead in the middle, on each side the connectors are the same length as eachother either side of the gap.

it's got 4 slots and 2 big bits of ram and 2 small when i swapped the big and little RAM over The computer wouldn't get past the hardware check

My knowledge of computers is not great, however we had a DELL for about 4years, when we looked at possibility of increasing its RAM but found that was unable to do this as it used a different type of RAM which was too expensive to get hold of as it didnt take off in the market or something like that is it fairly new the PC?

thanks for that, i'd imagine it's around the same age as yours, it does look odd, i know a lad with loads of dells from schools and such he will give me some RAM of it fits

why dont you run the crucial ram checker, which should tell you the optimal amount and type your motherboard will take

If its a Pentium 4 system it might be RD-RAM (Ram Bus Memory) and it was phased out because it was expensive to make as it ran at 800mhz but only at SDR (Single Data Rate i.e One Access Per Clock) apposed to the first DDR memory which ran at upto 400mhz but at 'Double Data Rate' so effectivly as fast as RamBus at half the price. You can still get it now albeit at a higher price than DDR2 lol.

Theres a little program called CPUZ (google it). Its got detailed processor info but also a memory tab too and will tell you what type and speeds they are etc.

If that doesn't work you can go onto dell and use their product search or like serin says go onto the crucial site, with it being dell it will 95% likley it will be listed.

Yeah go to www.crucial.com and run a system check and it will tell you what you have and what type of RAM to put in it. or if you know the model number you can type it in.

I used it then just found a website selling the Ram a hell of a lot cheaper.

...or even easier, why not tell us what model Dell it is (they make more than one). Or post the system tag. Then someone might look it up on Dell's site and tell you.
Or go to the crucial site and put the make (Dell) and the model in and it'll tell you what type.
