might be easy for you but gobbledegook for me, also my car has the larger speedo and the LH red light comes on sometimes and I dont know what it is

If you have a 1971 500L you will most probably have the 'square' instrument cluster--if so, the red light on the LEFT of the panel is your 'low-fuel' light. This light is in addition to a fuel gauge and will flash on when the attitude of the car alters (e.g. braking or going round corners) and the fuel level is low.

Thanks for that I was hoping that was what it was as I was low on fuel, just need to know what the RH switch is please
The three switches (interruttore) in the diagram above are:
4 = Speedometer illumination light. (only with switch 5 on)
5 = Outside lights.
7 = Windscreen wiper.
