Well after posting on here and being told at first that the speedo bulbs are 501s I purchased them, only to find that they are not.

Popped back on here posted and was recommended 501s.
Bought those, they came today and once again are wrong

I either want to replace the bulb + housing or the just the bulb, all I want is to change my clocks to blue, I've seen it done but can't get the correct bulbs!!!

I had a look in halfords and maplin today and the closes they have is a white 286 which look similar but I am unable to tell if these are the exact bulbs or not.

These are the bulbs that are in my car:

Does anyone know for sure though? I'm sick of getting all excited then the post comes and they are wrong :(

As suggested before, rather than change the bulbs just get some lockwood dials that have blue illumination, they are a straight swap and wont need the bulbs changing.

However weather you can get still get lockwoods that is another matter

:) hello applesei :) once again the only person to help :)

I really dont want to change my dials out just to change the light colour as I still want black dials.
Also looking round white dials are easy enough to get but I can't find black with blue inserts.

Anyway I have decided to but the 286 bulbs as a final do or die thing.
If they dont work then I'll just have to keep hunting lockwoods out.

Thanks applesei :)

501 is for the speedo - but the rest of the bulbs behind your clocks are 286

Hope this helps :)

Right, the bulbs are 100% confirmed 286.

However they were too dim to successfully shine through the green backing of the dials, lighting them only slightly, a kind of blue/green, which I knew would be a risk but at least I KNOW what the bulbs are now :)

The electric window switches were the same bulbs so I swapped them and they look great in blue sitting next to my blue head unit so I'm happy enough.

I think the only real option to switch out the colour properly would be to fit the lockwoods.
So eventually I might go down that route, but the money just isn't there at the moment sadly.

Thanks everyone, I feel I can rest now with my bulb quest at and end.:)

ADDITIONAL:
As far as I could see ronnieronson all the bulbs were the same fitment and type, could be wrong though, but Either-way the green backing was too strong to get a blue enough light through.

...yeah, that green plastic is a bitch... tbh, the best way of dealing with it is to either go with the lockwood dial faces (or make your own) - or get a set of '97 sporting clocks and strip them down and replace the green perspex with clear - though that's a bit of a bugger of a job (I managed to break two sets of dials trying to get it looking right, only to discover that I'd broken the dials in the process).

I gave up on mine eventually, before selling the car - but if you're interested feel free to dig up this old thread:
