Is cylinder 1 the front or rear cylinder?

Cylinder one is at the timing chain end and cylinder two is at the clutch side.

On a 2 cylinder engine it doesn't matter much - the one at TDC on the compression stroke is the one about to fire and the other one has just finished the exhaust stroke.

Can you explain, if valves are in balance on #2 does it mean compression is on #1??

Pu it on tdc and remove a plug, using a rubber type tube blow ino the spark plug hole.
One cylinder you cannot blow into( this is the firing cylinder.
The other cylinder just lets the air flow in as both valves are slightly open (on the rock) so not firing.
