How does everyone know Welsh? Please dont say they teach it in schools (I dont envy you! :yuck: )
WR, i do believe in Wales it is compulsary to do a GCSE in Welsh and Welsh Lit, like we have to do in Eng and Eng lit, the difference is that they only have to do it to a first language level. However, there are a number of Welsh schools in Wales (mainly the best ones) that only teach in Welsh and have exams in Welsh - this is where you meet the real Welsh speakers in general - most of the others treat it lower than we treat out MFL learning.

how dare you say my school was crap for not teaching welsh first language :p

i dropped welsh in the third year, secondary school, i hated having to sit at the front of the class for 3 years cause i was naughty :(

welsh isnt compulsary in schools, well it is in welsh speaking schools i guess :D

I'd say the schools that dont teach it are the better ones! Do the schools who only use Welsh teach, or have the option to teach English? Its just whats the point in learning it if its only that smaller part of Wales who use it

the welsh schools do teach english, the same as the english schools i think or i would imagine

speaking welsh is more of a national heritage as its dying out, most people only speak welsh down in the valleys now

if i had my way i would learn wlesh or at least the national anthem

You sure Gaz? I was under the impression that Welsh 1st language was compulsory in all schools in Wales (short course at least) where as Welsh schools had it as family language exams (sorry if the idea of 1st language vs. family language confused my post).

Also I think the "best" [state] schools in Wales are Welsh speaking - it's nothing personal as you know!

it is compulsary upto year 9 secondary school, so about 13-14 i think, or was when i was in school

im sure someone mentioned to me recently that welsh can be dropped in the options scheme, i questioned it too as the year i dropped it was supposdly the last year that it could be dropped, but that myth carried on until i left the school in 1999

WR, they teach in Welsh and you're asked to speak Welsh at break etc. but of course nobody does. Ysgol Glantaf and another, errr in the Camarthan (spl) area are two of the best [state] schools and they are both Welsh speaking. The reason for this IMO is the type of people that go there, a lot of people are from good backgrounds with parents who want their children to have a broader spectrum of knowledge etc. Also if you intend to work in Wales I believe you on average can earn 15% more (alot!) if you speak Welsh.

I personally think it's a farce lol, having travelled in Wales the additional cost of trying to get a dying language back again (and failing to) is millions - every road sign/marking etc. is in both languages for example.

I have a couple of welsh jokes. Thats so if you are welsh and easily offended I apologise.

What do you call a welsh man with a sheep under each arm?

A pimp.

What is the welsh definition of a leisure centre?

A sheep tied to a lampost.

If anyone is offended and has any jokes about southerns send them my way. I am always up for a laugh!

WR, it is, and a lot of Welsh people will tell you it's stupid, however, a significant proportion and a lot of those who are power, feel it should be pushed due to the heritige. It is an interesting one IMO - I personally feel it's silly but then again, people know I am not one for tradition and I guess if somebody tried to stop me speaking English and made me speak American I would be the first to stand up and complain lol.

No problem Gaz :)

What does WR mean?

How do Welshmen find sheep in long grass? Very satisfying.

My niece and nephew go to a welsh school. I personally dont agree with it cos neither my brother or sis-in-law speak welsh and their written english is crap because of it.

They start getting taught English at 7 and the only reason my nephew can read is because of the english he gets at home. That puts them at a serious disadvantage if you ask me.

Its not like there are any decent jobs where im originally from (swansea) to make them stay there. It took a friend of mine 2 years to get a job after his degree and he could have done that straight from school 'cos he didnt want to move away.

(my how political this thread has got!!)

mmm........ sheeeeeeeeeeeeep

I would have to disagree with you there personally, although I think it's pointless the people I know in Welsh schools have done very very well out of it - simply due to the type of people that go to those schools, in the same way that religious schools do well here. Also you will find that in year 10/11/12/13 they attempt to try to make you look towards the wider world and try to mix in English.

Oh I thought it was another web acronym.

Seems a bit worrying if kids are not being taught English properly - I'd have thought that unless you fancy being a sheep farmer English is important these days.

They are still taught English, they still do the same English and English Lit exams we do - they have the same number of lessons AFAIK in English and learn it in the same way as us - initially at home then at school. I guess there must be a few exceptions to this?
