cv joint & hub nut...

morning all.

I need a nearside (passenger) hub nut asap as I'm fitting a new cv boot this evening after work. are somewhere like hellfrauds or a motorfactor going to keep something like that in stock? I dont mind having to pay more than usual but it has to be fixed tonight and I already have the boot kit.

Also, should I be able to remove and refit the cv boot (the one litterally behind the brake disc) without having to remove the driveshaft?
The haynes manual infront of me says to remove the driveshaft but if I'm only changing the outer boot surely I don't need to? It will be a pain as I'll be running out of light come 6:30pm!

Tom? anyone?

i think for the hub nut it will be a dealer part. You can re-use the old oe I think. Have you thought about a split gator? does not need removal of anything

Thats what it is, a split CV boot. Thats why I'm asking if I need to remove the driveshaft like it says in the haynes manual.

Cant reuse the nut (although I'll probably have to for now) as of the way it has to be fitted.

if its a split cv boot going on no need to remove the driveshaft mate, just cut the old one off, try and retain as much of the grease around the driveshaft as best as possible and put the new one on. shouldnt even need to undo the hub nut that way, jack up, wheel off, old cv boot off, new one on, wheel on, back on the deck, jobs a goodun :)

No, you don't have to remove the drive shaft. Best to clean all the old grease off and make sure every thing is clean and grease-free before you start. You can get a sachet of cv joint grease from any motor shop. This method will pass an mot

I'll still have to take the hub off to get the new one on? the boot is tiny and it wont fit over the top of the disc! lol.

Dan

unbelievable! fiat had 2 in stock...and I'm in shock...

£7 though, seems a bit steep for a nut lol.

fingers crossed that all goes well this evening.
should I need to use a ball joint seperator then or not? I'm getting confused, as I'm not gonna have to remove the shaft I shouldnt need to?

Dan

You will need to remove the shaft from the CV. But you do not need to remove the CV from the hub.

still a little confused Tom, what do you mean by that?
The haynes states to remove the driveshaft from the car (causing gb oil to come out no doubt) but I doubt I'll have time to do that.
can you explain what you mean if you have chance? I don't think I quite understand what I'm letting myself in for.

Cheers,

Dan

You can remove the hub/CV assembly from the driveshaft with the driveshaft still in the gearbox and without removing the CV from the hub.

I would recommend you get a garage to do it as I'm guessing you don't have things like circlip pliers.

Dan, trust me no gearbox oil will come out, the drive shaft coupelings on the box arent lubricated via the gearbox oil, but by cv grease

ah i didnt realise the drive shaft would need to be removed from the hub, that shouldnt be a problem really, undo the shock from the hub after undoing the hub nut, remove the driveshaft from the gearbox end (by pulling the hub out towards you and it just pops out) and then push the driveshaft through the hub and cv joint. should be nice and easy, it doesnt take long to get the hub undone and driveshaft off at all, esp as you dont live on a unmade orad like me or work in a ****ty industrial port, so crap build up will be minimal

I do have everything I need, including the balljoint seperator. its just I don't quite understand the job.

Dan

I think the confusion here is Dan has a split CV gaitor that needs changing, hes looked in the manual and its a biggish job.

Then the second poster recommends a split gaitor, instead of taking it all apart.

Theres the confusion, Dan thought a split gaitor was mentioned as the problem, not the solution, lol.

Dan you can use something like this http://www.carparts-direct.co.uk/catalogues/so_splitdriveshaftgaiter.cfm so you dont have to take everything apart.

AHHHH! Now I get what you mean! but I've already bought the nut and new cv boot, grease, clips etc.

do you think that kit would be any good though? would it hold? I need to do my mot asap lol.

Dan

As mentioned. If you have got a split boot kit, nothing needs dismantling, the gator wraps around the drive shaft and is superglued together,(having first been cut to size)All that needs to come off is the wheel, just to make it easier. If you want to take the nut off i nice bit of scaffolding pipe on the sicket wrench
