As my daughter's 500 is getting on a bit, and almost new cars are still silly expensive, I thought I'd have a look at the new deals from fiat.

The new 500 range is really poor. A choice of 1 engine (1.0 hybrid), two trim levels, and 6 paint colours, of which half are dull.
When we looked before about 5 years ago, there were so many variation, colours, specs, etc.

I'd agree with both those statements.

Sadly the situation with most other manufacturers is even worse. There are very few new small petrol cars still on sale, and even fewer that are what I'd call a basic car.

I'm also looking just now for something to replace the Panda. A new i10 at around £15k seems to be the best of all the bad offers I've received thus far.

Petrol is still king in Australia but there's only one petrol 500 model, very expensive and available only with the 1.2l and DL, and one dealer in the state of Victoria. Nothing else of comparable size appeals either, being mostly cramped four-door models. It's unlikely I'll ever buy another car but if I had to only the Mazda 2 is vaguely interesting.

On Autotrader 3-4 year old mild hybrid 500s start at around 8k. You could consider a 2 year old Kia Picanto for 10k ish - roomy, lots of kit, still got 5 years of warranty.

Current 500 is £16.5k for low spec, and £18.5k for 'top' spec. It wount be my choice, but just cant see the appear so much for young people either.

I'm not an electric car fan, but what about the 500e? I seem to remember a couple of months back a forum member posted how he had picked up a pre-reg delivery mileage base spec 500e for about £13k. I don't know what is available currently, but might be worth a look on autotrader?

Just the hassle of going to full electric when it comes to charging, times and locations

Yep.... If it's just a runabout and you have somewhere at home to charge - no problem. Main car... then probably not a great idea. I just couldn't cope with having to queue for 40 minutes and then wait another forty whilst the car is charging at a service station.

There seems to be two optionsin the UK, £24k for normal, or £30k high spec with 118bhp.
Oddly all different colours to the petrol ones.

There is a 24 plate Action (in white) from a Fiat dealer, with 10 miles on the clock, for a shade under £15k.
Not quite the same deal as New Luigi, but a great deal for someone looking for one.

The reason for the restricted choice is the 500 ice model is being discontinued. It doesn't comply with the latest EU cybersecurity requirements, and Stellantis don't want to invest to update it. Unfortunately it's their best seller, and 500e sales have been poor, no doubt due to its ridiculous list price. Apparently they are looking at the feasibility of producing a petrol hybrid version of the 500e - not straightforward I would think, as it was a ground up ev. It will be interesting to see what develops.
