Hi, I'm looking for a little advice on a mk1 punto sporting 16v engine. I am rebuilding one from the ground up as a "friend" managed to grind a hole in the block (long story). So have bought a replacement block. Was advised it was the same 1.2 16v mk1 block. I have had the block honed, new rings. The build is looking good. Today I'd picked up some new oil seals for the crankshaft which took a bit of jiggling to get on. I applied a nice chunk of liquid gasket and offered the larger oil seal housing up to the block, and to my disbelief, the two lower holes do not line up!!?! I then checked the engine part numbers (should have done this a long time ago) and they are slightly different. The old one is M657 46448008 and the new one M657 46536 93. Does anyone know if the latter is a mk1 block and also if there were two different oil seals for the mk1 engine? This rebuild is starting to get very expensive!!! :bang::bang:

Hi, Can you elaborate on your post? I believe the g/box does line up with the block!

slight design changes with modifications etc and different parts may have holes slightly different to get you to use same make to fit.maybe everything will pop back in ,thats the life with cars nothing is straight forward..

we found that out with a replacement gearbox it would not meet engine was 1/4" out, wrong model supplied:mad::eek:

Just to clarify, do you mean the gearbox bell housing flange holes meeting up, or the actual shaft?

that was on the bell housing on a vw, splines on clutch fitted, never assume what looks the same is the same is all i meant.
