Hi all anyone know the crank pulley bolt size for a 2.0 tc 132 ? I'm trying to turn engine by hand before starting , ive already had spark plugs out and lubed up ,took off drive belt and removed old fuel TIA sam

Model
Fiat 132 2.0
Year
1978
Mileage
24000
1978, 24k miles...it's been asleep then.

Acetone)ATF mix is a good "piston ring free er....don't know acetones effect on valve stem oil seals....

Valves ( and clutches and brakes and etc etc etc ) can and do stick, so be warned.

Are valves "inclined" by chance ?

If they are, I am sure you are aware of valve to piston crown contact and the very real dangers of that, but also valve to valve contact possibility and it's dangers.

Hope you can moniter valves as crank is rotated VERY slowly and CAREFULLY.....bent valves and broken guides are very expensive to sort out, not to mention pistons.

A TV star says rotate engine one revolution by hand....

I say rotate engine many many times by hand, watching valves going up and down sticktion free, giving the chance for oil to arrive everywhere it needs to....you will see it arrive ...

As you are doing, take your time, hare and tourtoise....

Enjoy....

Mirafiori...my uncle Bill had one of those....he did not like it.

Dohc with inclined valves, be very very carefull until you know one hundred percent all valves are free with absolutely no sticktion whatsoever....cam belt would be a worry also.

What is the valve working clearances adjustment method, shims ?

I presume it is relatively easy to remove cam shafts ?

Refitting one cam shaft with pistons at mid stroke means that that camshaft can be turned willy nilly so as to check for free valves.

Repeat for other cam shaft.

With both camshafts out you can turn crank willy nilly with no danger.

Up to you but do not wreck the engine which is easy to do.

Really take your time...and enjoy.

What drive belt have you removed ?

Fan belt , its not been asleep since 1978 btw lol

There isn’t a single size across Fiat engines . They vary, M12/M14/M16 etc. and the head can be hex or Torx depending on the engine.
Also worth noting the socket size isn’t the same as the bolt size, so best to check what actually fits rather than guessing.
More importantly, they’re usually very tight (torque + angle / stretch bolt), so make sure you’ve got a proper breaker bar and the engine locked before trying to undo it.

@132sam

Assuming your 132 is manual transmission, the engine can be turned over by engaging 4th or 5th gear and pushing/rocking the car, easy enough to do if the spark plugs are removed (be careful when refitting No. 4 plug as it easy to cross-thread it as it's close to the engine bulkhead?).

Another way to turn the engine over gently is, with the pugs removed, refit the fan belt and use a spanner/socket (19mm iirc) on the alternator pulley nut to turn the engine over (if the pulley tries to slip inside the belt, just press on the slack side of the belt).

I'm not sure if you're asking about a bolt or a nut:-

The crank pulley nut used to be 38mm hexagon (i.e. normal socket) on the older Fiat twin cam engines, including afaik on the '78 Fiat 132. This nut has a normal right hand thread. If it's a nut, you'll be able to see some threads at it's centre.

But at some point some of the engines changed to a iirc 24mm hex bolt and this smaller bolt had a left hand thread - very important to remember this if removing the bolt. If it's a bolt you won't see any threads, just a bolt head against a large washer.

It's 38mm,

an 1 1/2" socket will do the job in a pinch.
