Hello, I have a problem with the steering on my 2000 Brava 12.SX. It's a cracking sound coming from the drivers side front wheel. Also my steering doesn't feel right, when I negotiate a left hand turn it cracks and the car jolts a little. Could it be the c.v. joint?

oh dear! i'd get the wheel off asap and inspect all the steering and suspension components carefully.

Sounds serious!!! Well i've took it off my drive to inspect so i'll report back but there is on hell of a thumping sound which sounds like it's coming from the drivers side wheel or near the middle. Doesn't sound good at all.:( (n)

Might it not be the clutch? After reading a few threads here there are hints in them that it could be the clutch.

I'm actually convinced it's my clutch now as I've just driven it around the corner to a mates house and slipped it out of gear whilst going round the corner, then as soon as I put it back into gear it's grinding.

Hold it - let a mechanic take a look at it - this may be joint, diff or like. Don't buy in advance.

Diagnose it first.

i agree diff is a likely cause (more than clutch imo).

£250 for a clutch is a lot.
the clutch should cost £40-50, and labour should be £100.

my clutch cost £310... lol but thats cos it took 7 hours cos it was seized on, and everything else was seized on too.. lol

apparantly he spent 7 hours more or less constantly swearing at my car...

poor car, it cant help being awkward!

my steering wheel creaks when i turn it, but i think its more a plastic on plastic noise than anything... it still turns so i'm still ignoring it.. lol

Ok people, it's not the clutch but the driveshaft. The garage said it looks like the gearbox.

sounds like the differential to me, you can change that without replacing the whole gearbox. its a common problem on the 1.2 models, just ask AndySX, its happened 10 times to him (or is it 11 now?)

Just had the mechanic on the phone, he said he'll have to take the gearbox out to match one up and said it could cost anywhere between £100 and £300 for one depending on the type. He also said that the clutch may be damaged but they'll know if it is or not once they get the gearbox out.(n)

Yes a Punto gearbox will fit, however one out of all the gearbox bolts wont go in. Not a problem, AndySX has fitted several punto boxes to his car. The 0-60 will improve, top end will be reduced if a 1.2 punto gearbox is used. Personally do what everyone else has said first before searching for a new/used box.

gearbox will cost £50 at a scrapyard (already removed ready to collect with 30day warranty), if he tries to charge more go and get one yourself and give it to him.

Isn't the differential pricey?

For me it was more costy to repair the diff than to get a new(-ish) box and fit it. Parts alone would cost me the same as what I paid for the whole lot.

And I paid an equivalent of 220 Ł for a Bravo box + service + clutch refresh (new padding + new bearing). But mine is a 1.6
