Punto (Mk2/2b) coughing and spluttering!!!

Hi all
We have just bought a 54 plate punto 1.2 for our son and it was running great for about a week. Unfortunately over the past few days it has become a nightmare. It struggles when you accelerate, juddering and hesitating. We bought an ecu reader which showed a couple of fault codes. One was P0460 fuel level and the other was fuel pump (sorry forgot to write the code down for this one). Has anyone got any ideas as to what would cure this problem? I have had a quote of £103 + VAT for a fuel pump kit but as our son is only a lowly student I want to be sure it is this before he goes out and gets one. Thanks

Could you turn the ignition on and test the fuel pressure on the injector rail? Think there's a valve on the end you can push open with a screwdriver. If you see fuel shooting out then you have good pressure. Otherwise we need to look at the pump, its fuel lines and its electrical lines. Can you hear the pump prime when you put the ignition on? Is there 12v going to the pump? Are the fuel lines good?
