go in ask them whats there minimum charge, it may be 15 mins or half hour, then say you want 15 mins or half hour of diagnostics, that way they shouldn't rip you off.

my last one was about £20, but another place wanted £40. Phone around

When you get a quote for the diagnostic ask them if they will discount the cost against any repairs you get there. You are after all saving them the necessity of doing their own diagnostic check.
