General Coolant Problem

Hello everyone.

My Dad has a 1993 2 litre Tempra with a coolant problem. Now and again when the engine is hot and it is then switched off, some coolant will come out from the coolant filler lid. About half a litre will escape. This doesn't happen all the time and it only occurs when the engine is switched off. The thermostat has been replaced and there is no difference.

Any ideas?

Diesel or petrol, there is a difference in how the pipes run. Half a litre sounds a lot, thats quite a lot in the total amount in the system. When it eventually cools (say next morning) what is the coolant level in the tank.

If anyone is interested, a new filler cap solved the problem of the water leaking...

It happened to my tempra as well, for a couple of times, once the radator was sent for servicing. The coolant temperature dropped, and the coolant level stays. And I don't have to regularly check and top up the coolant level.
