I put this as me and another FF member where doing insurance quotes with Confused.com. She (Emily91) hasnt passed her test yet but I was helping to find a cheap car to insure, and this is where it gets ridiculous. Em was quoted for a 1.4 5 door GP for £1200 on an 08 plate. Put then did a quote with a 52 plate Sei 1.2 and it was more... iirc it was £1400!!! How stupid is that! Right to me... I got a quote with the same Sei and I was quoted £450, but then did a 180bhp Abarth GP and it was £20 cheaper.... where the hell do they get these ramdom quotes from. The best one was on a 1972 classic beetle. My quote, £190 with £49 excess, brill. Em...... wait for it.......... £1100 with £800 excess.... on a 36 yr old car!! When I did a quote for a 08 plate T-Jet with confused came back as £370 which aint bad.... but did it with direct line.... £268.... £102 saving... awesome.... so Confused.com (n)

Dont think its just Confused.com mate, the newer cars are safer, have easier repair methodology and parts availability, plus they are less likely to injure occupants, so new cars can be cheaper to insure.

Example is my eldest, she had a 1.4 Saxo Furio on an X plate, she sold that and bought a brand new 1.5 Swift.
The Swift is just a tenner a year more to insure Comprehansive than the Furio was for 3rd party.

But what I was more annoyed about was the quote for the beetle, when the parts are really really cheap. The most expensive part is an 1600cc engine... £1400..... Windscreen you can pick up for £30! lol

Aye mate... but insurers are unlikely to go for used or reconditioned bits I dont think. On that type of car Classic Car insurance is best.

Car insurance is a maze anyhow, have to agree its confusing, young females normally get cheaper insurance than males of the same age and experience.

Deffo... my old Healy cost me 130 quid to insure comp on a 5,000 mile limited policy. Bargain! (y)

I heard from a mate who works in insurance that for a younger person to insure a old pocket rocket type car is more of a liability than a half decent one.

Simply becasue if you buy a 1.1 P reg Punto, you are gonna drive like a T**t because the car costs nothing to scrap anf replace (thats thier opinion, not mine)
Whereas if you brought a New 1.4 GP you would want to look after the car and therefore drive it steadier and more careful.

Load of old tosh if you ask me. I was really careful in my mk1 and a bit wilder in my mk2 punto.

Also on the subject of Confused.com
To go from a 1.2 8v mk2 punto (standard base model) to a Punto MK2b Active Sport 16v was gonna cost me in excess of £200. I phoned up CIS (who I am currently with) and they said there would be a £50 changover fee, no increase in price and because I have a clean liscence it will be even cheaper to insure. Bonus (y)
