My 2.8 JTD had a minor oil leak in the area of the camshaft cover, with no discernable drop in oil level on the dipstick.
It only takes a small oil leak to make a mess.
As I could not find any other oil seal in the suspect area, I have replaced the camshaft cover gasket.
It needs more time to be certain that the leak has stopped.
I am attaching an Iveco diagram showing the 2.8 JTD lubrication system. There only seems to be one pressure feed to the camshaft, at the No, 1 cylinder, or timing end of the engine. This supported my decision to change the gasket.
Production of the 2.8 JTD engine ceased in mid 2006, so all such engines must be at least 15 years old. I think that you can expect some deterioration of oil seals in that time.
