I have a Fiat Ducato 1993 2.5 TD based Hymer Camp 55. The battery is fairly new and in good condition. I have real difficulties starting up in extremely cold weather. The pre-heat indicator lamp on the dashboard flashes on and off and you can hear a realy clicking on and off. After a struggle, it will start but the light continues flashing for a short time. Starting is fine above freezing point. I understand that there are no glow plugs, but that the diesel itself is pre-heated. Maybe somebody could suggest how I might be able to improve this situation. Thanks in anticipation.

This may seem a daft reply but read it through before laughing.

I had the same and hunted everywhere for a glow plug. Even had my local mechanic looking.

After a lot of cursing and swearing we decided it did not have any - this was in spite of the local dealership offering to sell me a set.

Fault was cured by an ovehaul of the starter motor solenoid. This caused a large battery drain hence thered light coming on and flashing and clicking from the starter relay.

Ok now you can laugh.

My 1998 2.5TD Ducato had this system, luckily I never needed to investigate it but the flashing after engine has started is normal (flashes for a total of about 25secs IMRC whether or not engine has started)

The single thermostarter plug is mounted in the inlet manifold and has fuel and electrical connections and is controlled by a relay; if you are brave enough I believe the rubber inlet hose can be removed from the inlet manifold to check for correct operation:eek:
