Hello all.
I have had my clutch changed (release bearing shot) and the g/box oil renewed.
Now i seem to have a leak, strangely it looks like its coming from the top of the box, around the cable adjust area?.
Plus to top it off the speedo has stopped reading,
Well it will be going back in, but i will have to wait until tuesday at the earliest.
So whats to look at first? if i have to get the spanners out..
Thanks.

Speedo will be a cable issue: probably not engaged one end.

How did you "renew" the oil?

Could be leaking from the filler (front face of gearbag) or they will loose a bit from the top of the casing where the selector is. Unless it's leaking from the driveshaft oil seal and getting thrown up, I'd not worry. Are you sure it's gearbox oil? A sniff will tell you.

Quick reply again (cheers)
I asked for full G/B oil drain and new to be added.
" THEY LOOSE A BIT FROM THE TOP OF THE CASING WHERE THE SELECTOR IS".
Sounds promising.
It smells like fish and **** i remember the smell from my 899 when that used to drop on the exhaust.
where actually is cable located from looking from bonnet up?

If it smells like cats **** then it's gearbox oil :yuck:

Yep thats the smell.
Put it on the ramps and cleaned off the box of oil and crap, tried the filler grub screw and i could get a quarter of a turn thats all.
Left it running for half an hour and no leaks visable.
Had a look at the cable( its the one facing upwards forward of the clutch adjuster..Yes?) and wiggled it to see if i could remove it it was tight.
Took it out for a test drive....
No speedo reading.
And when i stopped it was leaking from top of the box around the selector area.
Like i have said it going back in but would like to give them the possibilities apart from there crap work.

I'd not worry about the leak, if it's just from the selector area: give it a wipe from time to time and it'll soon stop. Justy get them to sort the speedo out.
Mmmm!!!
why will it stop and where does the leak come from?.
More importantly when it does stop how does that leave the G/B level.
Ta..

thats part of the reverse gear linkage

get it back on the ramps, and look at the back of the 'box where the mount is, and where the driveshafts go in, look above there, you will see the cable coming down from the bulkhead and into the box, I think its a 17mm spanner [could be 19mm] give it a try, chances are it will only be nipped up, you can undo it, and pull the cable upwards, if there is an inner cable, refit the whole lot

then, take your dash apart and look at the back of the speedo for a cable

DOH....(y) Will have a look in the morn :bang:

Does your reverse detent work properly?

Cheers

Er sorry for late reply:eek:.
Reverse is ok including light,
found the speedo problem... the muppets forgot to refit it(n)
took it out for good run (about 5hrs) in the country and its still leaking.
Its as wet as hell on the top of the box, just under the clutch adjust.
Oh and i have used 10 mm of water.

It does begin to sound as though they managed to overfill the box.

Stand it on level ground, put a washing up bowl under the gearbox, undo the 12mm hex screw on the front side of the gearbox. When the oil has finished dribbling out, screw it back in.

Dunno about the water: must be going somewhere...........

You should need to push the gear lever down to engage reverse.

If you can get the car into reverse without pressing the gear lever down, then the detent cable is not sitting correctly.

You need to remove the reverse light switch to get the cable in correctly.

If the fitters have not removed the reverse light switch, then your oil problem may well be to do with the reverse detent cable connection.

Cheers
