Thanks for this, I went under with a powerful light yesterday and could see the serated part at an angle and guessed that's where the shaft should be going into, brain and dangerous springs to mind regarding the so called mechanic.
Looking, it looks like the casing can be removed in situ.

Is this a big job? Assuming parts are ok

Without having to remove gearbox it is less work than clutch change.
You would be very wise to have both drive shaft oil seals renewed at same time differential is off.
 
Hi, is this what I'll find inside? If I open it up can anything else become displaced, it lhd, so is this image for rhd

No difference left hand or right hand drive.

Bear in mind you have to remove both drive shafts to remove the differential unit.
