Clutch master cylinder & Slave cylinder

My mechanic has informed me that I need both the Clutch master cylinder and the Clutch slave cylinder. What are the function of each? I’ve been told one goes behind the pedal and the other is near the tranny

Imagine a syringe full of fluid
Picture a tube connecting this to another syringe with no fluid in.
If you were to push the plunger on the full syringe the fluid would flow through the tube and push the plunger out on the empty syringe.

Now picture a spring pushing the second syringe plunger back in when you are not pushing first syringe.


The first syringe without the spring is the master cylinder the second syringe is the slave cylinder.
