Hi there i'm new to this site and have a question. I have a P reg 1.9 Fiat Ulysee the clutch bearing has just gone, called out RAC that what they said it was. Want to know if i would be able to do the job with a mate and do i also need to change the clutch? Thank in advance for any replies

Hi, Welcome to the FF.

I have no idea how competent you or your mate are at car mechanics so can't answer the first part of your question.

You need to take the gearbox out of the car to change the bearing. It would be foolish not to replace the complete clutch having done all the work taking the box out.

Dave.

Hi,
You don't need to remove the gearbox! it is tight but I did my 97 1.9 in situe. definetly replace bearing, pressure plate and clutch plate at this time, hardest job is centering clutch plate, I measured spigot bearing and shaft and turned up a hard wood spigot, cut about 2" long with a piece of wire in the centre, I was able to push this into the spigot through the clutch plate thus centering it, wire used to pull it out after. plate bolted on a bit at a time as I turned flywheel to get it even. Good luck with it.

If the bearing has gone then it's likely that the rest of the clutch is not far behind. The bearing usually damages the fingers of the pressure plate anyway. You won't save more than about £50 buying the bearing seperately because it's much cheaper to buy the kit than seperate components. As for taking the gearbox out, well it may be possible to leave the box physically still in the car but you've still got to undo everything so it's much easier to take it out of the way so you can easily line up the clutch.

Sorry ignore my last post, I thought I was on the MULTIPLA section. No don't take the box out, pull it back onto the subframe. Sorry again for not paying attention!!!

I agree that it's not worth just replacing the bearing, getting the box out & back however is a fair old job even for a pro in the comfort and convenience of a well equipped workshop.
A new LUK clutch kit from SES is around £120 all in poss cheaper on Ebay.
