2015 500X--Have a heavy clunk that sounds like it's coming from the rear. Usually happens going over small bump in the road. Can feel a thud like something hit the floor in the rear of the car. Doesn't do it on every bump and doesn't change the car's handling. Usually happens 2/3 times on the way, and back to visit at a hospital 30 miles away, but not in the same spots on the highway. It's a very random clunk. Had it up on a lift at an auto repair shop and after looking, poking, prodding, and pulling on everything under the car, nothing was found that could be making the sound/clunk. Didn't see any dents or spots that had the undercoating knocked off either. I'd appreciate any ideas anyone could share. Thanks, gregjo1948

Maybe a crazy idea, but is it the parcel shelf making the knocking sound? If its clips are missing it can make noises. Mine does.

Has your tail gate / rear hatch door lock alignment / fixing security gone wrong.

You can check this carefully pulling and pushing the tailgate from outside and inside the car.

Generally speaking their should be very little movement when the lock plate and catch are engaged. Any small amounts of movement should/will be dampened / absorbed buy the rubber seal. Any misalignment or wear can cause the tailgate to rattle and clunk.

The rear hatch is very tight. The surrounding rubber is in good condition. This car has only 45,000 miles and everything is like new. The noise in question sounds like it comes up from the road and smacks the body under the trunk/hatch area. Doesn't change engine rpm or ground speed.
