hi all we have a 1.6 brava its on a t plate but ive had 2 tyres fitted to the front for mot, when you drive in a straight line passange side middle of car i get clunk clunk sound like cv this does not happen when you turn left or right. am i right in to suspect inner cv or is there any thing else i should
be looking for as a man at a fiat breaker yard said somthing about frontsubframe mounts which lost me, thanks for any advise given

Your post is a bit confusing... are you saying that the problem started when you had the new tyres fitted? If so then it should have nothing to do with CV joints or subframes, unless something got damaged or fitted incorrectly...

Can't comment on the CV joint theory, it's possible that on an older car they can go but I don't think it's a common fault (at least not on Fiatforum).

The most likely and usual cause of clonks and banks on these cars is worn bushes in the lower susspension/steering components, mainly the wishbones/track control arms, the anti-roll bar droplinks and maybe trackrod balljoints. You normally hear these when starting and stopping, or going over speed bumps. These could also cause front tyre wear since the wheels won't be held in a straight line and your tracking will be out, were your tyres wornm unevenly?

Of course you would expect the MOT to pick up worn suspension components...

Of course it could be engine / gearbox / subframe mounts, but you wouldn't expect these thumps just by driving along in a straight line.

Check out the front wheels first, then maybe consider the CVs if the symptoms still make sense...

hi further looking checked all joints and bushes no movement, jacked car up so both drive wheels clear of ground drove car in all gears so no weight on wheels no un-normal noise. so lowerd car back down went for short drive and after a while the clunk clunk sound returned but it comes and goes but if cv it would do it all the time,

so im now wondring is there a bearing or sort of thing where the shaft fits in to the gear box all advice thanks inadvance

many thanks shaun

You could always consider the gearbox / diff, obviously the diff works differently when you turn a corner compared to driving straight ahead.

The clunk could indicate somethink moving from side-to-side, this may not happen when turning because the loading is different.

On an older car checking or ideally replacing the gearbox oil is generally worthwhile and can help to identify or fix problems.

I had a new front sub frame fitted when i had that also the stablizer thingy at front

sounds very much like the good old rear gearbox mount, just do an image search on google for fiat brava rear gearbox mount... very common fault ! on brava's and bravo's if its coming from central area somewhere near shall we say slightly leftof the gearstick it will be the mount for the above mentioned there are threads about it too on here peice of cake to replace too.
