Technical Clocks gone mad!!

Hi folks,

I was in my car yesterday and after driving for about 5 minutes my clocks suddenly started going crazy, Mileometer/trip disappeared completely, Petrol light came on and the needle went to empty. The temp gauge went to the top and then back down again. the rev counter went to 'zero' and the speedometer went to 140 mph and stuck there.

I turned the car round to head home but suddenly it went went back to normal, however with in a few seconds it started again with the needles going mad and the trip/milometer being completely blank.

None of these things effected the car in any other way, Lights,Indicators etc all worked as should.

I got home .. checked to ensure the earth on the battery was ok.. this was fine. infact i even changed the battery cleaned the terminals and none of this rectified the problem.

Whenever i go out in the car now, all is fine for awhile but then all of a sudden the clocks go awol ... Do any of you good folk know what is happening and a remedy for it?

might be worth checking the connecters at the back of the clocks. might be needing a wee clean.

i think you should be pround to say you got your 1.8 to 140

yeah its probably loose connections on the back, i think you need to disconnect the battery before you do this otherwise it may cause the airbag light to stay on.

i have the same problem with my marea it's an S reg. was told by fiat that it would cost £200 to replace the instrument panel, not a lot you can do unless you can find the bad earth connection or loose terminal..soz i can't be of anymore help..

I had my '97 1.6 16v Mileometer/trip display disappear completely not so long ago but the other dials were fine. checked fuses, fine, cleaned the connectors(didn't look dirty or damaged)
But hey, they're back in action???

hi fella i had same problem with my clocks a few weeks ago.i visted a couple of local scrap yards and dropped on a motor with same insrument panel as my td125 marea weekend.i removed the insrument pod and payed £30? i then plugged it into my motor ( dont fit it yet) took for a spin round the block all working spot on. i then contacted some one to reset the milage i dropped of instrument pod and he called back later at mine with milage reset to same as what my motor had done.we plugged it into motor all ok apart from the back light on odometer/trip counter had blown this is a common occurance during the procedure. anyway replaced bulb all ok, charged me £40.refited the pod back into dash and all is sweet with the clocks now.this is a easy job to do ......

common fault with intrument panel, as said above you can replace it cheaply and easily.
