hi, i've got an L reg 899 cinquecento with a few probs... i'm abit simple with cars so simple solutions would be great!

first, my dad just changed the gearbox on my car a couple of weeks ago (my old one kept slipping out of 5th) and now when driving back to uni on the motorway the gearbox seemed to twist? by twist i meant that neutral was where 5th and rev should be... if that makes sense? basically i couldn't physically move the gearstick into the first and second position as these gears had moved to third and fourth, third and fourth were where 5th and rev should be and i couldn't get to 5th and rev... hopefully that makes some sense altho i havent explained it very well....

secondly, when i reverse there is a horrible "scraping noise from the rear of the car.. i recently had the back two sections of the exhust fitted so could that explain it?

third, when the clutch is up and the car is in neutral there is a 'ticking' sound like something is catching... this goes away as soon as i press down on the clutch...

if anybody could help that would be great!

The gear issue is probably one of the clips which hold the cable in place (both in the box immediately below the gear lever and in the engine compartment) having slipped off.

The clicking is likely to be a clutch issue of some sort. For that one, I'm afraid that the gearbox will have to come off again. Sounds like the release bearing is not on properly.

Yup sounds like one of the clips has come out to me, the rattling in your 'box is normal if its faint, if its loud then your release bearing is either not fitted right or its foobard ;)

thanks the gearbox clip would fit in with what happens so far... and the clutch thing is only a slight noise. i'll have a look on thursday when i get a chance and get back to you! thanks again
