well now my cinq 1242 swap is done my buddy has been working on his golf kinda like who can make theres faster we had planed to go to race wars at the end of aug. and race them but this week he got a new moter to put in his car (n) its a 1.8 he has a new carb and intake cam header for it so he just jump over me big time :cry:my only up on him now is his car has a 3 speed auto gear box and i have the 5 speed manual am faster off the line so the only way i can see to make it fair is turbo time looked all over the place i might have missed it but can any one tell me what i need to do befor i would fit a turbo in the car do i need to do any think witht the ECU or any thing like that i have the 1242 p75 TB and cam and whats the best turbo for the 1242

Your best bet is to check out the burple thread, or GhostWKD's old turbo thread. You will also need to decide whether you would want to run high boost or low boost.

Me personally, I don't think you should go turbo as money is a big object for this. Some people on here have spent a grand and over just getting the things to work in a state of stability.

Have you considered the 1.4 16v option?

Thanks

lol strange but i am in the same position as you my mate did have a 1.6 honda civic and i was going to race him with my 1.4 16v cinq when it was done but he f**ked the civic i now have to put a new engine in it. now he got a golf 1.8gti 20v so think im going the turbo way too lol

cheers gregor

Your cheapest option will probably be a lightly modded 1.4 16v but really anything will cost a fair amount. If you go turbo you'll need to spend to get it working well, go highly strung N/A you need to spend the money & go for a bigger non-FIRE engine and you're spending big money.

It comes down to the fact if you want a fast car buy one, if you want a project & learn a lot buy a 'cento & turn it into a project car. Sure I have a +180bhp turbo Sei' but for the money I've spend I could have a 4 year old Elise 111R which on track, rather than the drag strip, would eat my Sei' alive & still have change left over to take it to the point where it'd beat my Sei' in a straight line too.

its not the just some old 1.8 it is the very rare one out of a skoda stock it says 115 hp :( but i am looking in to the turbos

How much have you got to spend if you go turbo route?

I would personally invest your well earned money into a 1.4 swap, running an aftermarket ecu like Megasquirt or if you really have the cash to flash run an emerald ecu. Retain reliability rather than invest in a tow truck every 1000 miles.

If the turbo isn't installed or setup properly we would have another burple incident where lorry drivers have the crap kicked out of them ;).

Thanks

i have around 1500 for the next thing i do be it turbo or what ever and i have a full shop to use with most every tool i need but still looking in stuff

May be 115hp but the autobox will kill any power it might have. Esspecially a 3 speed. The gear ratios will be stupidly long and it will be very slow.

Best bet would be to stick with your 1242 conversion. Pop on a 40mm tb, punto 75 cam, full cat back exhaust and 4-2-1 manifold and a remap.

Its pretty easy to get around 75hp out of a Punto 60 1242 engine, and in a cinq, thats a pretty tidy power to weight ratio.

Chances are, you will see the golf off without much trouble with a stock 1242. Obviously, he will have a higher top speed, but will take him a while to catch you. Cinq will be a fair bit quicker in the corners too.

Just a single thousand, lol. When you could buy the kit direct from VA it was more than a £1000, now you need to get all these pieces seperately and then add to that suspension, brakes, uprated fuel pump, fpr, oil cooler, the list goes on. Your looking a much much more than a grand to get one up and running. And all that before servcing costs and the rise in petrol use. To say they aren't cheap is the understatement of the year.

People need to appreciate that you can go alot faster than a turbo-cento for alot less money. And if your young or have points on your licence they aren't cheap to insure either, I'm 26 next week and mine cost nigh on £800 to insure (but i do have points)

And tbh, i reckon a 1.4 16v cento would be very close to a turbo 8v cento in terms of performance.

Within 5bhp in terms of power. In terms of torque, the NA is way, way behind. This is my car which was run on the same RR as Emma's Sei. The Sei 16v may be faster point to point (especially in the wet) because it's much easier to drive.

Emma's old Cinq turbo, under Martin's careful attention (and loadsamoney) is now a beast knocking out 130+ bhp, eating tyres, snapping driveshafts, etc. I doubt a 500SS Abarth could live with it in a straight line.

But the 1.4 16v is the sensible choice.
