My recently purchased Cinq SX reaches operating temp, 90 degrees, only in traffic or idling. When driving normally, the temp barely reaches 50.

The cooling fan comes on at 90 deg exactly so there's no problem there.

I'm fairly sure this is a thermostat problem but have had difficuly ordering one from a local motor factors - no-one lists for a 900 only the 1100. My nearest Fiat dealer is 30 minutes drive away and I can't be arsed to go to Croydon anyway.

Is there something special about the 900 thermostat? Any other suggestions for these symptoms? Is it a typical thermostat change or do I have to watch out for anything?

Cheers,
Roly

Mine is similar on the open road, unless I am really putting my foot down on a dual carriageway / motorway... it goes above 90, at 90mph. (on my personal test track of course)

When you go at speed you have cool air going to the rad, hence low temp. When sitting in traffic the temp rises as no air is going though the engine bay and the fan blows the hot air away.

Just the norm :), well the panda behaves the same way, unless F.I.A.T can prove me wrong ;)

Mine appears to get up to 90 in traffic very easily (eg. 10 mins sat there:D:D)

but in normal driving after 10 mins it sits at about 70, because the air taken in by the engine is cold- Ive got a K+N 57i with a cold air rampipe that helps cool the engine.

It only gets to 70 after about 15mins lead foot driving:D:D

My old panda did this, replaced all the fluids in the rad with new coolant and brought it all down to around 50-70.

The trouble I find with my sei that it has no temp dial so I can't tell other than sitting at McDonalds with the fan roaring away.

Does any1 know what colour the coolant should be or how often it needs replacing?

Mine stays around 60-70 celcius. Although after a good run and then dropping in to traffic or doing the weird tight manouvre which requires me to get on my driveway (in reverse only possibly), the temperature soars to 90 but the fan stops it getting higher.

I don't believe you should worry mate.

Add my tuppence worth to the temperature debate.

Normal town/rural driving: Around the 70-80 mark
Motorway driving: Flatlining needle
Traffic jam (helllllooooo Birmingham!) 90-100, fan kicks in.

Needle rises a bit more if fans are set to 'Hurricane Hugo' in hot weather.

I can see the top of my car in the car park...

If the engine isn't up to operating temp or thereabouts, the thermostat shouldn't open so there shouldn't be any hot water in the radiator for the fan to cool.

Not many people appear to have 'stable' operating temps. Maybe I'll just live with it...

I had recently replaced the radiator on mine because it had a leak and the operating temperature whilst driving tends to stay just above the first mark whilst in traffic jams it rises to 90 and then the fan kicks in. Like everyone else has said depending on the speed you are travelling the more air running through the radiator the cooler the temperature level, no air means higher temperature level.

Cheers,
John
