Chroming plastics

Is it possible to achieve a chrome effect on plastics, is it possible spray job etc? As you obviously can't chrome dip them due to the considerably lower melting point of the plastic.

Yes

Yes its possible to achieve a sprayed crome effect.

Its not the melting point which doesnt allow you to crome the plastic - its the fact its plastic!!

You will find dependant on the type of plastic you will need specialist paint. Its normally a 6 coat system which will be quite complicated to achieve. You wont be able to do it out of a can, but as i say depends on the plastic.

Cheers Kev, so would you expect this to be an expensive job as par ce in comparison to the same amount of a metal being chromed?

A croming proccess will cost a lot anyway.

Compared to the same amount of metal being sprayed yes though.

Proper chroming costs quite a bit anyway as there are a large number of steps required before you put the final layer on. Each part has to be plated 3-4 times first with copper and then with chromium.

You will never get a good chrome finish on a soft plastic.

It was just a thought, a mate is due to Chrome my wheels i thought at the same time if poss he could chrome the centre console/ door interior as i want something different, other than having it sprayed. No offence to those that have had it sprayed I'd just sooner be a bit different.

So In your opinion/s have i reached the end the road regarding this idea, though i will settle for a chrome like mirrored effect, providing its in my budget range

ASk your mate or look in the yellow pages for metal plating companies.

For a proper chrome finish the item has to conduct electricity as its electroplated. I think they use a chrome paint on most plastics as its easier.

I've seen non-metal things gold plated, you have to spray them with a silver paint first.. £££
