I've been having a problem with my 500F popping out of first for a while (126 engine and transaxle). Adjusting the gearshift lever forward (and back) along the tunnel has made no difference. The linkage and

Before I resort to dropping and opening the transmission, I'm thinking it makes sense to check the detent balls and springs. I've never opened the cover before. Is there anything I need to know before I do that? (Except that I'll need a new gasket.)

Thanks,
Rusty

Others on Forum will have more specific advice, I suppose an indent spring broken or weak will not help, but over the years I wouldn't say it was a common cure to that fault on any makes of vehicle.
Another point is whether it happens under load or on the overrun.
Under load I would say was definitely a gearbox strip down.:(
Many years ago as an apprentice I ran a very tired £10 1955 Morris Minor 803cc, when I drove up up the steep hill to my mum's house in first gear full throttle, half way up the hill it would jump straight into second gear and let you carry on with no issues.
I used to boast I had the only automatic Morris Minor in the World.;););)

😅🤣😂
Did ya strip down that gearbox after that, Bugsy? 😁
Why fix what is working?
It was the same car that my friend and I were picked up by the Police as they thought the exhaust was very noisy.
When I put my foot over the standard exhaust tail pipe and the engine stopped proving no exhaust leak, the Police man asked what is the noise then?
I said it is the worn engine, it is just about to blow up! He brightened up after that sensing an offense and said "isn't that dangerous?"
I said "well there are two mechanics in the car and we are not bothered" He gave up after that.:)
Incidentally I later bought an engine from the scrapyard for £5. so the car carried on, still on same gearbox.;)
