Technical changing lock barrels, *and rant, sorry*

well two weeks into the ownership of a new van..... and after 8 years being self employed.....

some little scamp, decided to smash the lock on the back door of my doblo, and help himself to my cordless drills, I was round a customers house, had started loading up to go to next job, had put drills in van vault, shut lid (but not locked it) put tool bag on top, and box of light fittings... locked van.... went to grab rest of stuff, came out and bag had moved, light fittings everywhere... thought that's strange... then went cold as I realised I'd been turned over, I was gone 5 minutes, and in that time they stopped broke in and moved stuff about and opened van vault grabbed drills and ran.... and one of the builders was sweeping up the whole time at the front of the row of 4 vans, mine was the last one, he saw a car turn around and just thought he was lost

so they took 4 makita drills, worth just shy of a grand and all the drill bits and hole saws etc

luckily I've got a bit of tool insurance, which has helped....

anyway rant over, I am having an alarm fitted on tuesday, and have ordered a replacement lock today, but had to order a full set of locks, so when they turn up, I am going to change the rear locks to the new key and leave the front 2 doors and ignition on the old key (I may change eventually, but the parts lady reckoned it would cost about £75 to have a recode and £25 in labour... and with replacement kit and alarms a s well it's not at the top of my list)

so got that off my chest (sorry)....


anyone know how to change the lock barrels on a 05 doblo?

John its not difficult but there are a few awkward bits (sheer bolt & a retaining clip) however if garage would do it for £30-40 might be worth considering.

I would also check the outer handle assembly for damage.

I had my side and passenger door screwdrivered in a busy supermarket car park on a sunny afternoon. Know just what you mean about going 'cold'

Now have Kasp/Master style hockey puck padlocks all round.
So last year they broke a rear window instead :bang:

Fortunately I had fitted polycarbonate sheets which kept them out but I would recommend grills and some additional locks anyway.

There is a reason why only a lockset is sold.

Basically by doing it this way Fiat will update the key no. of your vehicle so that if you were to lose the keys in the future they could sell you a replacement key.

I was actually quite surprised how cheap the lockset was...

and don't have a problem with having to be sold the whole lot... just need to save as much as I can at the minute.... just got the van, end of year vat etc etc.... then new tools, locks and an alarm on top of that...

I will probably change the rest of the locks in a month or two

Hmm obviously I didnt serve you John? or I have a bad memory!

To be honest I couldnt do much on the price of locks and keys anyway the discount from Fiat is very poor on security items!
