deary me
so ive got a packard bell PC here to try and breath life into
told it was running a bit slow

well slow isnt how i would term it.
its using onboard graphics with a whopping 256mb of ram on XP

to give you an idea.push the windows key, wait then eventually the start menu slowly appears line by line
even with the low ram i didnt realise it was this slow!! bunged in a spare stick to raise it to a massive 512mb of ram and its still paltry on performance.

tbh im gonna stick in another mobo with a P4 2.8,1 gig of ram and a Geforce FX5200 256MB. when i first got it and saw how slow it was i just assumed it was full of junk, spyware and viruses(it was a bit) but now its all clean its still slow as

well i ran diskeeper through all its tools and stuff
no worries with the HD's reported
was very badly in need of a defrag but all fine now
the PC works as it should just very slow.
i just cant believe it was this slow from new.
ive swapped ram with other ram (all 256mb modules)

I've seen this once before. HDD, RAM Processor etc all tested fine but ran really slow as you describe even with a fresh install of Windows XP.

I put all the hardware onto a new motherboard and all was well. Duff motherboard?

Have you tried resetting BIOS to default settings?

as i said im going to just bung in another mobo/cpu/gfx card to sort it for now
its the ex mother in law who has been moaning for ages how slow it is, but it was only last week i saw it in 'action'
nothing relating to the discs in the event viewer i can see
bios is in default. nothing really can be adjusted as i tried to see if i could clock it a bit

That don't sound right to me :chin:

Presume you've repartitioned and set up two drives (always a good idea as long you've got at least 80gb to start with).

Would have thought any hardware issues would show up in device manager although some older 5400rpm ide drives can really make a system seem slow.

I thought they were just inferior (read failed!) Pentium CPU's with smaller amounts of cache RAM, but offered at a much cheaper price for budget computers?

meant to be ,i run a sempron in another pc(amd's celeron) and it runs fine
think they ripped the arse out of this celeron ;)
once i get her pc fixed i'll bung this board in another case and have a fiddle with it

well ive got a spare IDE drive to put in
so basically i'll be replacing everything
I wouldn't mind betting that'll fix it (y)

One other problem with Packard Bell is if you use the recovery CD then you end up with all the same old crap that came with it at purchase - but I guess you wont be doing it that way ;)

Always amuses me doing a reinstall as the customer nearly always comes back and says "Wow! - it's faster now than when I bought it."

.....well, for a short time anyway :D

I would never touch another Packard Bell, I brought a 3gb Laptop 5 year ago, bloody thing soon began to run to hot for the fan and shut down :bang:

I flogged it for spares a few months ago and now use the hard drive in the car.

Trev

gawd, why do i get into these things

right mob/cpu installed (Gigabyte GA-8S661FXM + Pentium 2.8)
2x 512mb ram installed
InnoVISION Geforce FX5200 256MB installed

200GB maxtor HD installed

and i have no display

  • PC boots up,case/cpu fan runs.mobo RAM light and case power light are on
  • PC seems to be checking the HD and DVD drive

  • tried both VGA/DVI on the GFX card and nothing
  • removed the GFX card and tried the onboard VGA output, nothing
  • removed CMOS battery for a while
  • removed the ram and tried the ram from the old mobo, nothing
  • tried just one stick of ram and nothing
  • tried booting with no hard drive and nothing
  • tried booting with GFX card removed, hard & DVD drives disconnected plus only 1 stick of ram in.no display
  • swapped for another stick of ram in the other slot.no different
so whats next? :(
