Styling CD player removal

Most of the Fiat (and some other) units have "keys" which fit into little holes on the front of the unit. You can use part of a wire coat hanger to bend new "keys" - all they need to do is go into the holes & release whatever needs to be released (hey you know I don't do technical descriptions!).

How do I remove the cd player without damaging it? I have seen keys on eBay but I don't want to buy the fiat ones in case they are of a newer design than ones which would work in a classic panda.

Is there a way to remove it without keys?
You'll probably need keys, it's the ones that match the cd player rather than the car, pukka Fiat's useless if it isn't a Fiat head unit (which it presumably isn't.) Depending on age and brand it's usually either a 2 prong effort either side which is easily replicated using the trusty wire coat hangar (probably easier to get hold of stereo keys than wire coat hangars these days though), or a thin flat blade either end of varying lengths depending on brand.
Depending how well it's been fitted you might be able to drop the fabric hammock and ease the cage out from behind, but if all the little flaps have been bent out you'll struggle to do it without breaking the housing:(

Hmmm, if it's an old ish one it'll probably be the prongy type (4 small round holes, 2 either end) you just want prongs thin enough to fit in the holes and shove in about 2 or 3 inches to release. Try knitting needles. your local charity shop will doubtless have a sizeable bucket at giveaway prices.(y)

who needs keys.. if it takes a "key" to undo it.. like long flat bit of metal.. use a split lollypop stick.

if it is the type that has the 2 small round holes on each side, use a bent welding rod.

if all else fails, just pull the dash panel down, on the cadge there will be things that you can push in or pull out that will realise the radio.

trust me.. im a pro.
