When I put a cd into the slot it takes the disc in but then it makes the worst grinding noise for 30 seconds then just pushes the cd out. Does anybody have any ideas of why this is? And a way that I can fix it?

Is it one particular cd, or any cd? It sounds like the player knows the disc is in there, and is trying to read the index track, and failing to do so. My experience of this in the past was with my daughter's Aiwa stereos, which both faid with faulty lasers, and several computer cd drives that started by failing to read cd-r's and progressed to not reading pressed cd's.
You could try an "air duster" to dlow dust of the laser lens and laser receiver, but tbh I've nver had any success with that.

You won't really. The laser bounces off of a couple of prisms before passing through a lens to focus it on the disk surface. In time, the prisms (which are inside the optical block) will get covered in dust, the laser LED gets tired and the rubber mounts holding the lens get tired causing it to sag and the block has a hard time trying to focus. Also, over time the bearings in the motor wear causing play in the disk table and the disk wobbles at speed which makes it even harder for the laser to track it. Usually a new optical block (laser) will sort it.
Make sure its covered by the warranty before they change it. I recollect earlier posts saying the warranty on the stereo is only 12 months. If you are going to get a £400 bill for a standard radio, you might like to consider something cheaper and better.
