Cats fail in 3 ways, breakup where the ceramic is broken and you will hear it rattle, meltdown where melts and blocks the exhaust or just blocked by carbon. If its blocked or melted you get loss of power as well as dificulty starting and bad idle.
The best way is to take it off and take a peek with a torch.
You don't want to have to fork out £3-400 for nowt.
