Car warranties and such - a bit confused?

i have access to... a canadian charcoal pit!
actually there's a nice takeout with BOGOF pizza's and nice chicken kebabs.

found this on the renault website:

What is the warranty on my imported vehicle?

Vehicles that are purchased in 2002 onwards, from outside the UK dealership (ie.an imported vehicle) are eligible for a two year unlimited mileage warranty.

Yeah I found that too Redsei, not sure if I posted it, maybe just pasted to Stu on MSN.

OK, we phoned MP, none in stock for 2 weeks but we went to a place called Ian Shipton car supermarket and another called Hilton.

I'll start with Hilton - they wanted about 13.1k (inc. all fees) for a dynamique dci 120 in platinum, awful boring colour. Liked the car but if you're paying that sort of cash you may as well get a colour you like? (I talk as if I am buying the car, I have my parents under control ;) )

Ian shipton has the same car, in ottoman blue (one of the best colours in the range IMO) for 12.8k approx inc. fees, same everything.

Both 0 miles, both had their quality checks in Paris before being imported here, both will have UK car on log book, both exactly the same spec as if we went to Renault ~ 4k or so less than they offer lol.

Only downside is Renault offered us 2.5k on Part-ex for our old scenic and Ian Shipton 1.8k when it's worth plenty more, which I said to him:

"Trade in value on parkers is stated at 2750, that's for 70k mileage, we have 90k but the car is excellent condition (we spend money on it) nobodys telling me 20k extra on a diesel is going to lose a 1/3 of the value!" He went up to 1.8k from that statement from 1.7k but nothing more so will probs sell it privately.

So it looks like we're getting the Ian Shipton one, parents just doing figures and finally deciding if they need it - after all that they will probably decide they don't need it lol.

The scenic has some wonderful design features, do you know what the best is on the whole car IMO? There's a drop down mirror for the driver/passenger to see the kids in the back which doubles as a second rear view mirror....as a frequent passenger there's nothing more useful if you want to look backwards. Maybe a personal thing to me though!

yea... mine's in ottoman.
They don't do the platinum anymore.. it's been replaced by Hessian which is slightly darker.i do like the scenic.. my mate's got the old one and its really great for road trips.
was chilling out in the new one in the showroom whilst i was waiting for a sales rep.

lol, ottoman is nice, much better than "ink" and when I was told "ottoman" i was like "this is the one" lol. I love our one when I drove it to school - only sixth former with a mini mpv lol!

Maybe these are Hessian then? We were told platinum or maybe just date from when it still existed? Whatever is the case it's not a nice colour IMO.

The biggest thing putting my dad off practically is the lack of 12v socket in the back. The book shows 2 in the back but if you have the centre console sliding thing it has one in that but that's a factory option (so we can't get it) and we haven't yet seen a scenic (even at Renault in priv spec) with the two side by side in the back, weird. Renault were one (if not the) first to bring it out and then they take it away?!

Sorry poggy, didn't bother in the end as we found that one. However, it now looks as if we're going to do something else lol.

No problem, you could get a 6 month old pre-reg Ulysse for about £12-13K and they are full of toys and being a £20K plus car originally you wouldn't loose a lot of money over the next few years and it would probably only have 2-3K miles on the clock. We have had ours for more than a year and it's great.

The only reason I want a Discovery 3 is that I always wanted another Land Rover and the Discovery has 7 seats and is loaded with gadgets. Had a test drive last week and was amazed at how good it was. The local dealer won't offer a penny off the list price, but autoebid offer over £3K off straight away. Not sure if the wife will let me spend the money though as she loves the Ulysse.

Not sure if this has already been mentioned, i read most posts and couldnt see it but insurance is higher on imported cars.

Bros gf had to pay 10% more because it had been imported :)

My family are Renault "loyal" and have been for 13 years or so (having owned 5 Renaults in that time in total) so a Fiat wouldn't be even considered lol. Also it HAS to be a diesel, mainly for the fact they now have a caravan and the torque is useful.

Our old one is fine, only "problems" are that it is a R reg so "getting on", has 90k on the clock now and no aircon. We only paid 6k for it when about 2.5 years old with 43k on the clock (was worth 8k) so we have done well with it. So they wanted a change, aircon/CC for the summer (this year they are in Italy for 5 weeks or something) and the 120BHP 6 speed engine. However, they have now changed their mind and are looking for a late "old" model scenic as you get more goodies for your money and we won't lose the initial costs of owning a new car - something they dislike on principle more than anything else. It also means they won't need to borrow a penny.

The scenic is perfect for us, it's compact yet can be called upon to do the job of a much bigger car if needs be - we never ever need 7 seats anymore either. I have to say - and this pains me to do so - the new scenic isn't quite as practical as the old one, example; lost the 12v rear powerpoint, supposedly replaced by 2 in the back and 2 in the front but they aren't there?! lol Also the underfloor compartments that we so love were actually blocked from lifting up with my dad in the seating position...it also wasn't as airey as they lost the sunroofs (replaced with the optional extra huge panoramic sunroof).

Anyway, I ramble!

I guess it must be much harder to find something like the Disco and get money off because it's a much rarer car.

This wouldn't have been true in this case, the car would be written on the log book as being a UK car, it's a parallel import, it's exactly the same as a UK spec car in everyway including security systems (thatcham 1 alarm and immobliser and RAID - renault anti-intruder device(?)) (which is maybe why your brother's gf had to pay more)

Nobody but us would know it wasn't built just for the UK.

It hadn't even left France before coming here according to the quality checks lol.

The log book on her car says the first registration is in the uk.

But because her car isnt registered on the main dealers system they know its an import - her warrenty also doesnt include paintwork damage for some reason.

I dont know enough about it tbh i just thought i would mention it.

Shes got a fiesta finesse btw :)

Interesting, well what I read up on, Ford are one of the worst for warranties so maybe this carries through. They probably would have to include the paint work if anything was brought up - it's a pan-European warranty it seems.

The only difference with Renault is that you get a 2 year warranty instead of a 3. I think after April 2002 any car first registered here has to be stated as a UK car.

All of this legislation was brought it to prevent maindealers from cheating people.

As I say, it's most probably to do with the security equipment, if a car is first registered in the UK the insurance company wouldn't know anything different.

:)

My brother bought a Scenic 2.0 Monaco (51 reg) from a large Renault specialist near Birmingham. It was an ex Avis car, but was only 9 months old and covered by the 3 year Renault warranty. He still has it and hasn't had any trouble, apart from his wife hitting a post and needing a new door (but you can't blame Renault for that).

I'll try and find the garage name, it is not a Renault franchise but it does belong to the Renault Franchise dealer on the other side of the road. I think they sell cars which are not allowed to be sold by the franchise dealer.

So far the wife is not keen on the Disco as is doesn't have sliding doors and it's difficult to get our little boy out of his car seat in a parking space when you can't open the door fully. So looks like I am loosing the argument to get one !!!!!.

Monaco is a nice spec....we just have RT, second most basic, at the moment. Hoping to go up to dynamique this time (which is just below Monaco it those years). That includes half leather, CC, alloys etc. The 2.0 isn't a bad engine it's just neither particularly fast or economical, hence why we have a dT now and will have in the future. The main problem is that we want a DCI engine and not the DTI, it's a much better engine with the DTI being barely better than our traditional dT - we could easily get a low mileage mid spec DTi from a car supermarket with 15k on the clock, 51-reg for *i think* 6500.

The scenic has been our best car, it was an excellent concept and well deserved the sales success IMO.

Personally I would think the Ulysees would be a more practical car for day to day business?
