car stereo probs

Hi all total newbie to this site sorry for any mistakes im making
Here goes yesterday i got myself a 2002 stilo and of coarse i want to put my stereo into it but i cant get the dam thing to power up i have read a few posts about people having to run a power wire from else where ie cigar lighter is this really a good option is it just a case of stripping the wire back and joining it all up to run it to the stereo plug any other suggestions out there.

I think running a live from the cigarette lighter is to get the unit to go on and off with the ignition.
