On Saturday I found out my Fiat punto had been tempered with...
The passengers door is picked and my cheap GPS plus some tools/coins were stolen.

It seems it was picked with a screwdriver and shovel the car door part
connecting to the lock.

you can see the picture attached, I still have the lock knob, although I can put it in and 'lock' the door, it will easily came off.

Does any one now if this will be a difficult job to fix?
Tell me that I don't need to have the whole door+lock replaced:cry:...
the car is now in a garage but still waiting for the man to quote me.

Also, I do have fire+theft insured, so if I want to claim the repair, do I need to call the police first?

sorry this is my first car and I am new to driving as well.

Thank you!

i beleive that most insurance companys will ask you for a crime number... but i aint sure if it will be worth making a claim for a small problem... maybe if the whole car was stolen.... one lesson learnt tho... Alarm system maybe ?

The exact same thing happened to me last night. And in Sheffield! When they broke into mine, they didnt take the lock off though, they cut into the side of the lock, and did it like that somehow. My central locking still works but thats got me more worried! The only thing I had stolen was a couple of games i was going to give to charity, but had my cd player still there. I guess I should report it to the police, as this could be more serious.

oh dear... sounds like a new crime wave...
Anyway, I have it fixed by my garage, the said either change the whole
lock system (£250+) or get rid of the lock and weld the wound (£125) but then the lock can only be operated inside the car.
I went for option 2 since it is a cheap car.
two days later when I try to pick up my car they told me they managed to put the lock back in (y) !

not exactly as good as new but at least it is secure now!
