Can I do this...wireless ad-hoc question

if ICS is enabled, it will be using class c addresses, and iirc the network giving the internet connection is using class b addressing. I'm pretty sure i asked paul for the ip addresses so that could be checked on msn

Firewalls disabled - yes, but even if i didn't, I would need something at a later point!

Make them a member of the same workgroup (not strictly necessary). - DONE

Your laptop B is getting an IP address on the same subnet as the the wireless card on laptop A?
Laptop 1 wireless side:
Physical Address: 00-0E-35-E6-70-**
IP Address: 169.254.30.169
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:
DNS Server:
WINS Server:

Laptop 2 wireless side:

Physical Address: 00-04-75-F9-E6-**
IP Address: 169.254.142.187
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway:
DNS Server:
WINS Server:

Laptop LAN side:

Physical Address: 00-C0-9F-81-0D-**
IP Address: 10.4.60.***
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 10.4.60.254
DHCP Server: 10.4.60.254
Lease Obtained: 12/12/2005 15:04:34
Lease Expires: 13/12/2005 15:04:34
DNS Servers: 212.135.1.36, 195.40.1.36
WINS Server:

As you can see, the wireless bit is talking enough for the IP to be assigned but nothing else...

On laptop A, your wireless card and external connection aren't members of the same subnet? - I don't know? By the looks of it they aren't looking above though.

Do you still have internet access on Laptop A when ICS is active?
Yes

why is ICS assigning silly IPs?! bloody MS stuff..

disable DHCP. And statically set sensible addresses. use the wireless IP of the router laptop as the default gateway and for the DNS servers

On laptop 2, the default gateway should be 169.254.30.169 - the IP address of the wireless card on laptop 1.
The DNS server also needs to be set. I can't remember whether it needs to be 169.254.30.169, or the IP address of your ISP's DNS servers. (I can't remember whether ICS acts as a DNS proxy).
Add these settings manually (In fact you should add the IP address and subnet mask manually to laptop 2), then give it another try.

Thise IP addresses are part of a range that is autoassigned in the event of no DHCP server being available. The idea is that if it chooses an IP address from that range, then the chances are that it'll work.

Arc, that's the ad-hoc networking doing the IPs is it not?

So, is this an ok suggestion:

Laptop 1 wireless side:
Physical Address: 00-0E-35-E6-70-**
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: ???
DNS Server: auto?
WINS Server: auto?

Physical Address: 00-04-75-F9-E6-**
IP Address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS Server: 192.168.1.1
WINS Server

no, the adhoc bit is the actual connection handling - not IPs. IPs are either static, or assigned via DHCP.

Didn't know what them ranges are used for, so from H has said - can assume DHCP wasn't even working anyway.

Them static IPs look fine. On laptop 1 you don't need gateway or dns settings inputted.

Right (I just wrote "write"...dear me!!!)...

I them up as described above, but stuck in the gateway and DNSs the same as my ethernet, I doubt that made a difference though.

Now it shares the net connection and I can go to the toilet and surf once again. Jk...

Now back to what I use to synchronise everything....

Dear me!

Well done Paul, this was out of my league so had to wait till you slipped up before posting!

lol...I go through phases you know where I make mistakes like that. Like I wrote "i got through". It wasn't a typo but an actual error with my mind thinking "got" works there and "go" doesn't. I used to think it was linked to sleep but at the moment it happens on and off fairly randomly. It is quite worrying that when I read reports back that I have written that I can see mistakes like that, I can't think of any specific examples just yet however.

I wonder if there is a name for such a condition or whether it is just a lack of concentration!
