not too sure ....
i was driving my 2.0 jtd 02 plate yesterday along at a steady 70 mph then lost all power just coasted to a stop .. got out had a look in engine could see both belts intact ( both had been replaced 10k miles ago ) , so tried to start it , it turned over very quickly ie no compression , i could see belt turning ....... now what do you think ...... no oil in water , no air in water when cranking over .......... has any one else had a camshaft snap ?? if so was it similiar to the way i describe ...
many thanks
mark

ok update so far ,,, garage says the cam is not tuning but the pulley is ...well i sort of thought that but its taken them all day them to find that out .
Now if i had the car at home i would of been able to take the timing belt covers off and had a good look , is it the cam pulley bolt that has come loose/sheared or i guess it must have a woodruf key to keep it in place that might of come loose if the bolt came loose too .
therefore no further forward

I had this problem with a brand new megane (about 3 months old when it happened!!) the bolt/woodruf key went and did alot of damage to the engine, Renault said that the engine was beyond economic repair and supplied a brand new engine under there warrenty but after it was repaired i never collected the car and just told them to sell it as i felt i couldn't trust it.
obviously i hape your engine has faired better than that one, but it seems to be a common fault with french cars as peugeot had a problem with the HDI engine and the bottom pulley needs replacing every 35-50k
and before anyone says that the ulysse is not french just remember that these are/where built in france in a peugeot factory and rebadged as a fiat

turns out the chain between the 2 cams has snapped. so the bill keeps going up.

Bu**er! Servicing & esp oil changes were up-to-date presumably?

Just Snappage... well blow me down...

self servicing ... oil every 9k and filters , belt done 5k ago ...

I'm not familiar with this engine... so it has a cambelt drive & a chain linking the 2 cams? I have only ever seen a cambelt driving both cams...

I'm a Noob I guess.

What sort of miles had it covered? I have tried in vain to find a service interval for the chain, can't find an answer, obviously you will need more than a camshaft to repair that, head off? let us know the progress, best of luck, T

it has 130k on it and i could not get any answer on chain changing , guess its just of those things , no warning or nothing , and cams are only from fiat at £400 .....

question??
i'm not totally ofey with the engine but is it not the same as a Alfa jtd engine i think the head is the same as a vauxhall 1.9cdti too ?? also i'm just thinking here but it might be a cheaper option to go and get a secondhand complete Head from the Breakers (complete with cams and valves) probably get one for between £150-£300 max.
would be worth looking into just incase you can get around it for a cheaper price:) have you looked on ebay for a head? i'm sure i saw some on there a couple of weeks ago

Also (depending on how confident you are) what about doing a complete engine transplant? you can get another complete engine for around £500 or if your feeling really flush there is a complete brand new engine on ebay for £1195
