Bear in mind that my camcorder is so old it takes VHS tapes.. I bought it on a whim and have never used it

If I was choosing between tape (mini DV, not VHS.. lol) and DVD now I'd go for disc. There's little to choose between the formats in terms of picture quality (both are around 400 TVL/pph, from memory), but recordable DVDs are pennies these days and you can finalise the disc then whop it into a PC for editing. Got a DV tape drive in your 'puter? Thought not. If you've got a tape based camcorder, you'll need to firewire the video in. Just my 2p's worth..
They are gadgets though, and we all love gadgets. One day I'll succumb and get a hi-def HDD camcorder (when the prices drop enough), and then probably use that for half an hour before putting it in the cupboard like I did with the first one..

however i noted dv was still in use and wondered if i was missing some huge benifit
