The 11,000 mile cambelt. Has it encountered a seizure or just fallen apart?

By removing the belt, you may of jeapodised a claim. Having said that, it looks like the belt has got entangled and shreaded maybe?. Look at the pulleys for any wear marks.
Being a TD, the belts tend to get a lot of torque put through them, so they need to be kept in excellent condition and fitted correctly. I think your engine had a pulley mis-aligned or the tensioner fitted wrong way round[seen this before!]. Or the belt was not tensioned correctly and was rubbing on cam belt cover[check it out]. Engineer required ASAP!!!

Fiat say the cambelt repair is out of 1 year guarantee and say it could be a jammed waterpump.

Would that, if true, explain the rythmic pump type squealing noise a couple of days before expiry? Also a strange odour lately - which at the time I thought was 'off' coolant, which might have suggested it was standing around????

Could the waterpump belt, (i'm sure its on a seperate belt drive??) be capable of jamming the cambelt pulley? All the cambelt tensioners, pulleys etc look in line and feel free.

The problem is that an inspection is £170. If its the waterpump then there's no comeback and I might as well take the head off and have a look. :slayer:

Thanks

Usually when water pumps fail, you know about it from strange noises and overheating. If the pumps bearing has collapsed, it could cause the damage. Think it runs off the cambelt. Well considering the age and value of the car, might as well take the head off. Did the engine overheat? Whilst head off, check the head for straightness and have it skimmed if needed. Either a gen Fiat head gasket or a Payen Gasket will be fine. Cost effective way maybe is to swap the head for another as long as bottom end ok. Depends how many valves are bent and cost of replacements.

Yep agree, change waterpump at every second cam belt change. On a TD, belt should be changed every 30k - 36k as these engines are hard on cam belts. Also, what accelerates the water pump's failure, is lack of coolant change. TD should really be changed every 12 months or 2 yrs max with a full reverse flushing and radiator off if possible.

Re: Cambelt - the movie (the sequel)

Why does Lindsay Porter say the head bolts are M12 when they're M13 !!! :bang: Luckily the bolt survived...

The waterpump, steering pump, alternator run freely. And as the pistons go up and down ok I suppose that means the're ok? So I'm wondering what caused the cambelt breakage. The cam pulley won't move but whether the head jammed or was broke at the time I don't know.

I'll take the head to a specialist
