I've checked all the other threads on this subject without much success. I'm having a cambelt changed shortly along with the water pump and tensioner (£110 for the parts + £115 labour) as suggested by everyone.
Do the other fixed pulleys involved ever fail or require changing after a certain period. The car is a 1.8 and has done 95k and i can't remember if they were changed the last time so they could be the originals. Trying to plan things so whilst it's being sorted i can cover all eventualities and get the parts together.
 
having just done all that on m y 1.8 i would suggest that you chane the alternator belt the tensioner and guide wheel as well it iw only another £55 in parts and they have to remove the belt and guide wheel to ge tthe timing cover off so only extra is the tensioner which is one 13mm bolt as if the belt breaks it can wrap around the bottom of the crank and snap new timing belt
 
the best thing to do mate is buy a t belt kit, comes with the belt, guide pulley and tensioner pulley,they do fail and tensioner pulleys are now modified they used to be made from plastic but now from mental also change the pump and drive belt,the last thing you want is to have to change the water pump after another few thousand miles and taking the the belt off again (y)
 
I actually picked up the cambelt kit yesterday and as previously mentioned it does come with the tensioner and guide pulley. I changed the auxillary belt a few weeks ago but not the tensioner, presumably this belt runs the alternator or am i wrong?
 
hi yes that belt runs the alternator if yu changed the belt recently might be worth doing te tensioner now that they got to disturb it again
