Till you tension the belt and it all moves then have to put the belt on and second guess how many teeth out it will be when tensioned

(played that game before) ;)

you tension the belt with the cam and crank locked the cam pulley is then slackened, so it free wheels when you tension the belt once tensioned the pulley is nipped up hence the locking kit..

Bringing up an old thread here but does anyone know of anywhere to get a locking tool for the 1.9 mjet? The Sealey one is £114 and there are some on ebay a bit cheaper. I didn't think they would cost quite this much tbh. I may have to get the garage to do it and do the rest of the service myself. Although, I was looking forward to learning how to do it whilst using the university workshop :)

Edit: I have just found this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sealey-SAAB-V...t=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item255fad539d It doesn't say for Fiat but the engines are the same anyway, so would this be ok?

Indeed they do, they supply the 16v kit though which costs £108 - 10% saving :O
I'm only going use it this once, well possibly twice as I will be keeping the car for years to come.
I have just made a list of what I need to do this and it comes to £330 ish. Just on parts, so don't really fancy paying for a garage to fit it all as this will push it nearer £500.

My list consists of:
The Vauxhall timing tool? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Sealey-SAAB-V...t=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&hash=item255fad539d

Auxilary belt http://shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Details&ProdID=2793&sku=7078 do I need a tensioner for this?

Filter Kit http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=s...&secondary=137&opts=68&btnViewProducts=Search
but I aren't sure which oil fiter I need :s

Cam belt kit http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Details&ProdID=5078&sku=12496

Selina oil
Anti freeze coolant
Brake fluid
Gearbox fluid

oh and two strut top mounts http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Details&ProdID=2812&sku=7103
as they have been winding me up for about a year :/

Will these parts be good quality? I've also just noticed I have missed the water pump off my list :/ d'oh

... Water pump http://www.shop4parts.co.uk/?name=store&op=Details&ProdID=670&sku=2408

bumps the price up to around £360 ish but not forgetting the 10% discount so I will essentially be getting the water pump for free :) woo. haha :/

Edit: Just added everything to my cart on shop4parts and the final price is £328.90 plus the cost of the necessary timing tool, plus I don't know if I need a new tensioner on the auxilary belt or not :/

The only locking tool you may need is the crankshaft locking plate (those camshaft pins are for the 16v, 8v has a pointer and notch on the pulley), though TBH aligning the cam then adding two paint marks on the crank pulley will normally suffice.

Auxiliary tensioner isn't that important- if you find it's notchy/noisy you can always whip the aux belt off again and change it without much hassle.
